Supportive Behavioral Services (SBS), funded by and modeled after MHSA’s prevention and early intervention philosophy, provides for the underserved populations of youth in Ventura County between the ages of 2-14 who are at risk of Juvenile Justice or school failure, who live in stressful family environments, and/or who are potentially gateway users to drug and alcohol. The referred youth do not qualify for other services and are without a current mental health diagnosis.
SBS, a community based program of Casa Pacifica, is subcontracted through Ventura County Behavioral Health and was initiated in November of 2010, with implementation of services beginning in December of 2010. The program focuses on preventative measures to establish better social, emotional and coping skills among family members via educating parents/caregivers about appropriate limit setting, consequences and rewards. The program, as a “family coaching” service recognizes and reinforces the current strengths among family members and helps improve communication, whereby the referred youth and their families may move toward better understanding of one another so that needs and compliance issue are met more frequently. The program builds on the strengths within the family dynamic and helps the family to create non-tangible yet satisfying rewards.
As a short-term (90 day) service, SBS strives to assist families in acquiring basic coping skills toward a process of improved social functioning and to better maintain systems of effectiveness within their homes; however, during the fade-out of services the program links families to other community resources (i.e.: parenting classes, gang prevention programs, family counseling, substance abuse programs, domestic violence support, etc.) to further enhance long term effectiveness of desired behaviors and to continue implementation of preventative measures.
Services can be provided within the home, school or community.
