Lisa’s Letter

Editor’s Note: Jody Kussin, Ph.D., Director of Community Programs - Ventura County received this letter from a former Casa Pacifica resident.

Hi Jody,

Lisa's LetterI hope this email finds you well. Last year I believe was our first year participating in the donation of items for Casa Pacifica. At the time I was not working in Enrollment (of students to University of Phoenix), but attended the All Enrollment event when the items were collected, and therefore became aware of the donation. I was walking with a co-worker, who was carrying her old prom dress when I asked her why she was carrying it. She said she never wore it and would never wear it again and she could donate the old thing to the charity that we were donating to. I asked her who the charity was and she told me, “hmmm Casa Pacifica or something like that…” I was almost brought to tears. I don’t think she could then or even now understand the impact that she had or was having.

I am originally from Camarillo. Born and raised. In June of 1996 I graduated from junior high. A week later I was admitted into Casa Pacifica. A few weeks later, I too participated in their annual prom. Through the emotional roller coaster, discomfort, and removal from my friends and family, the prom was an experience that made myself as well as the other children in Casa Pacifica feel a sense of hope and self worth.

I wanted to share my story to let you know that the donation and charity of the dresses, slacks, shirts, ties, and shoes of my coworker last year, and employees his year with the University of Phoenix, go far beyond the gift of giving and touch beyond what many will ever know.

Thank you for the support!

Fondly, Lisa
